Taiwan’s global dominance in semiconductor fabrication
- Both China and the United States depend on Taiwan’s global dominance of semiconductor fabrication for most of the computer chips their companies consume and sell. Chinese semiconductor companies can only produce about 6 percent of the chips needed to feed the Asian giant’s world-leading consumer electronics industry. China depends on the Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) to make up 70 percent of the deficit.
- TSMC also fabricates, under contract, 92 percent of the most advanced chips designed by U.S. semiconductor companies.
Why India’s statement on Taiwan rattles China
- While India urged restraint, and de-escalation of tension in the Taiwan Straits, its response to the ‘one-China policy’ question, that India’s position is well known and needs no reiteration, is a message to China that the use of force for Taiwan’s reunification will not find favor with India.
- It tells China that attempts to unilaterally change the status quo and use force for Taiwan’s reunification with the mainland will not find favor with India.
- By maintaining ambiguity on the “one-China policy”, Delhi is conveying to Beijing that its stated position on this issue should not be taken for granted, especially since a reiteration of it can be interpreted as a support for China in the present crisis.
- Indian and Chinese troops have completed disengagement at Patrolling Point (PP) 15 in the Gogra-Hot Springs of eastern Ladakh. a major friction point in the region, in a phased, coordinated, and verified manner.
- On Aug 14, Taiwan expressed gratitude to India and several other countries for their calls for exercising restrain and avoiding unilateral actions to change the status quo in the Taiwan Strait in the face of China’s belligerent military posturing following US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s visit to the island.

- This island nation has been desiring to cash in on its good rapport with Modi & large economic presence in Gujarat and expecting to expedite FTA with India ever since he took over the reins of New Delhi. Under visionary leader Prime Minister Modi, greater economic partnership with Taiwan has been coalesced by encouraging the domestic manufacturing sector, removing all impediments, liberalizing tax laws, and strengthening the supply chain mechanism. Economic strength will be a key factor in determining leadership in the emerging world order.
